Roman columns beside the Umayyad Mosque in the old city of Damascus. The mosque was built on the site of a former Roman temple, preserving visible traces of the city’s layered past where pagan sanctuary, Christian church, and Islamic mosque each occupied the same sacred ground over the centuries.
